Shishaco 100pcs Coconut Hookah Charcoal Review

Shishaco 100pcs Coconut Hookah CharcoalNo, I don't smoke a waterpipe. But I was looking for an odor-free, smaller sized charcoal to use with resin and church incense. Unfortunately, the distribution system in the U.S. has been saturated with counterfeit Three Kings charcoal (see the Three Kings Products --all one word, then dot com -- website for details) that goes off like a smoke bomb when lit. So I started looking at hookah charcoal, and found this one. It is, or claims to be, an all natural product made from coconut shells. What is nice about it is that, unlike other hookah charcoals, this comes in small, 1"x1"x1/2" squares, which are just the right size for home use.

The only difficulty with it is that it is not fast lighting. That is because it has no additives, and is somewhat denser than normal incense charcoal. There are several ways to light it. The way I do it is with a candle. You need some tweezers or small tongs to hold the square over the flame, for about 3 minutes each side. This will get it going, and you have to let it sit for about 10 minutes so that it gets covered with grey ash, before placing any incense on it. Two ways that I have heard about but not tried: (1) If you have an electric stove, with coiled burners, you can get one of them red hot, and then put the coal on top, turning after a few minutes.(2) Get a plain aluminum or steel pan (no non-stick coating) and put it over a gas burner, with the coal inside; turn it up high and let it heat for several minutes, turning the coal once it is lit.

Lighting these coals can be a pain, and you must be very careful with them, as it is easy to drop one when transferring between whatever method you use to light it, and the thurible. Also keep in mind that it is charcoal, and therefore gives off some carbon monoxide, so keep a window cracked. Another trick, and this works well with "Athonite" Orthodox-style incenses, is to place the incense next to, but not on top of, the coal.

It's tricky to use, and something of a pain to light, but the reward is that you get no chemical odor, no explosive flare-up, and very little mess.Start your coal before preparing your meditation or whatever, and by the time you are ready to start, the coal should be hot and covered with a layer of ash. You'll then be able to use your incense without the 4th of July effects common to self-lighting coals.
